Bob Harris describes how he and Lee Ann added their skills and artistry to interpret the courtyard theme suggested by the museum: "We were given the challenge to create an abstract design consisting of two large aloe vera flowers with large vines coming off of them. Once we obtained a conceptual drawing from the museum, we made a large 12 x 12 plastic template of the design and carried it to Phoenix with us for the advance work. More Details
The sidewalk adjoining the bus arrival area outside the Children's Museum of Phoenix is adorned with a new mural that will help teachers and parents keep children organized when they line up to board and exit buses. Southern Arkansas University art professor Steven Ochs and concrete engraver Gerald Taylor conceived and applied the design. In keeping with the museum's imaginative spirit, the mural takes the shape of a 100-foot-long, brightly colored origami-style snake with its head pointing to the gate. The local community also got involved. More Details
The museum requested an ocean-themed area with an organic shape for the 20 x 25 stamped patio created during the Introduction to Stamped Concrete workshop held at the Concrete Decor Show & Decorative Comcrete Spring Training. The challenge was to devise an approach that would look elegant but be simple enough to let workshop participants get hands-on practice during every step in the process. More Details
Concrete stains were used to improve the appearance of a plain grey sidewalk leading to the historic entry steps of the old 1913 school building, which is now a museum. At the same time, participants in Bob Harris' Concrete Staining Fundamentals workshop got hands-on practice while learning about the steps necessary to complete a successful basic acid-stain project. The Koi Pond Mural has captured the imagination of young museum visitors who pretend to swim and splash on top of the glistening, reflective surface. In advance of the Concrete Decor Show & Decorative Concrete Spring Training, Miracote brought together a diverse team to create the faux koi pond inside the museum. More Details and Video
The U-shaped balcony outside the elevators on the second floor of the Children's Museum called for something unconventional. It provides an overlook for a new fanciful three-story Climber that looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. Children making it to the highest point of the Climber look down on the balcony from a flying bathtub. More Details
Julio Hallack and Trevor Foster joined forces to provide back-to-back workshops on the fundamentals of floor resurfacing with microtoppings and overlays. In the process they renovated a dark break room in the basement. The space now sports a sun motif in the center and splashes of springtime colors. More Details
Jeff Abrahamson of Wholesale Floors in Phoenix took on a big challenge when he decided to rehabilitate part of the 86-year-old basement floor of the historic building that houses the museum. He reached for Diamatic equipment to do the job. American Decorative Concrete Supply donated the densifier and coloring materials. More Details
Initially, the floor of the Arts and Crafts Room on the main floor of the Children's Museum of Phoenix was going to be polished. But the existing concrete proved to be too inconsistent for polishing. Instead, the floor was coated with a Miracote overlayment for a stenciling workshop. However, even more was in store. More Details
